6 th November 2007 – Queen's Speech
Proposed Extension of Right to
Request Flexible Working:

Among the twenty-eight bills referred to in today's Queen's speech is a proposal to extend the right to request flexible working. Currently, the option is open to parents of all children under six and disabled children under 18. The new proposal is to broaden the scope of the right, to encompass all parents of children under seventeen. The government has stated its commitment to take this plan forward with the support of business. To that end, Imelda Walsh, HR Director at Sainsbury's, has been asked to conduct a review, reporting back next Spring. After that, businesses are to be consulted as to how the proposed changes should be phased in.

Weekly Worldwide Weird Laws
When we ran our first short series of legal podcasts in 2006, one of the most popular features was the “Worldwide Weird law”. So We decided to turn it into a weekly event.

Thanks to everyone who contributes to this section. Special thanks to:
Professor Gary Slapper, Head of the Centre for Law at the Open University, who collects this stuff and whose column in The Times is proof positive that the law is an ass and Martin West of Mooncraft Productions, who delivers the audio versions of these pieces for us.

Week Beginning: 10 th December '07
